Civil hospital guards strike work, seek job security

GURUGRAM: As many as 30 employed at struck work on Monday, alleging that they are not sure if they are still employed at the hospital for more than 20 days before the renewal of their contracts. Owing to the strike, the entrance in front of the ward and doctors’ offices were crowded on Monday.

The workers, who also wrote to the civil surgeon, met him on Monday. In the letter they said said, “Every year, before our contracts get renewed, there is a gap of 20 days for which we don’t get paid. If we don’t work fr these 20 days, we’re at a risk of losing our jobs because hospital officials say that there is no guarantee that we will be rehired.”

According to one of the senior guards, doctors at the hospital told them that there is no guarantee if they would be paid or rehired even if they continued to work during these 20 days. Furthermore, workers claim that their salaries have not been paid for the last two months, and that it may not get accommodated when a new company gets the contract.

“Every year when there is a new vendor, a bunch of old staff is fired and new people are accommodated,” said Geeta, one of the security staffers, who has been working in the hospital for six years. “We are made to do all kinds of other work, like cleaning. If attendants of patients beat up doctors, we are held responsible and they threaten to file complaints against us,” said a security staffer.

Earlier this month, allegations were made that a tender for hiring an agency to provide support staff was issued to a bidder who did not quote the lowest price. Friends Detective Security Services, one of the bidders, alleged that it was disqualified on wrongful grounds despite quoting the lowest price. Following this an investigation was ordered on Friday by deputy commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh.

Arora, the civil surgeon, said allotment of the bid pertained to before he assumed office on June 1. “This has been brought to my attention and an inquiry is yet to take place,” he told TOI.
