KANPUR: Six Basic Training Certificate (BTC) students, all of them aged between 22 to 24 years, and their teacher were killed while three were injured critically after being run over by a State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) bus on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Taalgram area of on Monday morning.
The driver of the bus, who managed to flee from the spot after the accident, was later arrested and sent to jail.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
The deceased have been identified as Mahesh Kumar Gupta, Mithilesh Kumar, Abhay Pratap Singh, Nikhilesh, Vishal Kumar, Jitendra Kumar Yadav and Satish, all from Prabha Devi Mahavidhyalaya, Khalilabad, and their teacher Vijay Kumar.
Police said the students and their teachers, who were on an educational tour to Haridwar-Rishikesh, were standing by the roadside after their bus ran out of diesel, when the speeding bus coming from opposite direction ran over them.
