PUNE: Two unidentified men on a motorcycle fired two rounds at a 35-year-old woman on Saturday afternoon.
The incident took place near Hindustan Antibiotic Limited (HAL) in Pimpri, when the 35-year-old woman was on her way with a friend to a sweets shop to celebrate her son clearing the SSC board examinations.
The bullets did not hit the woman. According to the police, the two wanted to terrorise the woman, as she had filed a complaint against them for outraging her modesty in 2014.
That case is due for hearing soon in court. A case of attempt to murder has been registered with the Pimpri police against the unidentified motorcycle riders.
Assistant commissioner of police (Pimpri division) Satish Patil said the two men had arrived at the spot on a blue-coloured motorcycle.
Patil said that the woman and her friend were walking back home with a box of sweets around 12.45pm. “At this time, the masked suspects arrived at the spot and fired a bullet in the woman’s direction. Hearing the sound of the bullet, the woman fell and became unconscious though the bullet did not hit her,” Patil said.
After watching her fall, the suspect brandishing the pistol or revolver fired another bullet in her direction. However, this bullet too missed the target.
“Her friend raised an alarm and the two motorcycle riders sped from the scene. They went towards the main entrance of the HA,” he said.
A local resident, who is witness to the firing, informed the city police control room about the matter and Pimpri police rushed to the spot.
Deputy commissioner of police (Zone III) Ganesh Shinde, Patil, senior inspectors Vijay Palsule, Vitthal Kubde and others went to the spot. “We found empty cartridges there,” Patil said.
Patil said that the woman had lodged a complaint under the section 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of Indian Penal Code against couple of men residing at Pimpri in 2014.
A senior police officer told TOI that the proceedings of the case will soon start in the court. The woman has already refused to withdraw her case. The suspects, involved in the firing case, may have wanted to pressurize the woman to withdraw charges against them.
However police are also probing if the incident was politically motivated.
